Academic Study Skills
Asteria Academic Study Skills are delivered personally by our founder Julia Bloxham who has many years of experience within the higher and further education sector. An experienced librarian, Julia also has a postgraduate degree in Information Management which she gained as a mature student.
Asteria offers a flexible program of workshops your academic institution may choose from, all designed specifically for further and higher education students of any age. These are essential study skills necessary for students to succeed, as well as practical skills these workshops also create personal skills which can be used throughout their time as a student. These courses can also be combined with any of our Personal Development workshops. Your chosen package can be delivered either by session or by half day or full day. Longer term packages may also be arranged.
Workshops can be delivered in the day or after normal study hours up until 7:30pm. This allows for greater student attendance and reduces disruption to daily lectures or classes.
A maximum of 20 places are available to any one of the workshops detailed below, unless specified otherwise.

Academic Skills Coaching Workshops
Academic Referencing (Harvard or APA) Duration : 1.5 hours This practical workshop teaches students the basics of referencing and to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. They will discover how and when to cite, understand bibliographies and reference list sources (including footnotes), and how to build accurate references with confidence Planning your research Duration : 1.5 hours Delivering a well thought through research project or assignment takes time, planning and qualitative research. This workshop will help learners to establish the purpose and nature of their research, identify and justify the methods for carrying out that research. Proofreading Fundamentals Duration : 1 hour Proofreading is an important final element to the assignment or dissertation writing process. It can make the difference between submitting an outstanding paper over an average paper. This workshop will address common mistakes such as; grammar, review of content, conformity to academic writing rules, assignment brief requirements, citations and referencing. |
Copyright Law : The basics Duration: 30 minutes Copyright education is becoming increasingly important in the digital age. This workshop teaches the fundamentals of copyright law, Copyright ownership, types of legal licences, copyright limitations & exceptions, permissions checks and questions associated with copyright. Critical Thinking in the Digital Age Duration : 2 hours Academic writing involves being able to critically evaluate information and make accurate conclusions. This workshop will enable learners to develop their critical thinking skills, differentiate between descriptive and analytical writing, evaluate the usefulness of sources of information, and formulate fluent and coherent arguments Communication in the workplace Duration: 1.5 hours This practical workshop highlights the communication cycle in the workplace. It will help support learners that are new to the work environment to understand the needs of businesses for their staff to act professionally and effectively through the various communication tools available to them. |
Essay structure & style, analysis and evaluation Duration : 2 hours Academic essays demand a specific structure and style of writing. This workshop will help develop the skills required to meet these needs, and identify academic terms and meanings. It includes the consideration of two key elements of academic writing: analysis and evaluation. Using your Academic library Duration: 1 hour These days the library is not just a collection of books, or a place for study. In this workshop students will learn the value of using their academic library. This one hour workshop will look at the type of support academic libraries can provide students for research and educational activities, and the advantages it can bring to their future employability How to set goals and stick to them Duration : 1.5 hour This workshop develops the individuals’ goal setting strategy. It incorporates coaching models and techniques that set short term and long term goals that are specific and purposeful, meaningful, realistic and achievable. This workshop will look at goal achievement and discuss ways to ensure that set goals stay on track until they are achieved |
Returning Student? The basics for academic study
